Genesis 12

January 1st

Go out from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great. and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you. Early in Genesis we read and learn about the flood. The flood where God was so ashamed of His people, He wanted them to vanish. However, there was one thing He wanted to save and that was Noah. Noah was tasked to build an Arc and protect himself, his family, and two of every kind of creature there was on Earth. This Arc saved those God deemed worth saving at the time. After the flood happened the Lord promised that there would never be another flood on Earth that was delivered by Him. Therefore, He told the remaining creations to multiply and spread out across the land to build generations of livelihood. From Noah, onward, we quickly see that the task of multiplying was achieved. However, they had to be reminded through the scripture (see above) that they were to divide and conquer. As fearful as it may have seemed, God needed the people to move across the land for the sake of His plans. The promise in this is that it would be fruitful for not only their families but the world around them as well. Reading these words just after moving across the country was such a God send. I knew I wanted to study scripture here in this space, but truly could there have been a better place to start? We are in Genesis, the creation of existence, and immediately learning that there is peace in following what God is calling you to do. What I love about these words is that they are timeless and truly speak to any age. Society has built this fundamental understanding that we are to leave the land of our relatives (our hometowns) right after high school. But is there really a timeline on God’s plan for you? Just like Noah’s descendants after the flood, we can find ourselves fearful to leave the things that make us feel comfortable. More than that, sometimes it truly takes a nudge and a reminder from God that there are many blessings on the other side of leaving and creating your own life elsewhere. It takes a reminder that in doing what we are called to do–start our new business, go away to college, move states—there will be abundance to follow. No matter the age. The beautiful thing is that God knows when you are called to do something. Thus, He is already preparing us for what is to come, and He assures us that He will be there every step of the way—"I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those that treat you with contempt”. I think that this is so powerful because when we take a leap of faith like moving away from familiar territory, it can be intimidating to trust different people and make a new family. However, as marked in these words, God intends to control the variables that make us fear so that we can see His goodness. So what can we be left with today? God calls us for more. Sometimes He puts things on our hearts and orders us to do things that we can never see the ending of. You could never know why He gave you this crazy business idea, or why He invited you to go away to college. But there will come moments where we will know why. And as I read more of the Bible, and as we live more of our lives, we will see that those moments why are how we come to praise God.
